A woman in her 50s wanting to enjoy sex before she loses her libido sounds like a show that will contain lots of funny moments, female nudity, and sex, but when the HBO TV series Youth, starring Sharon Horgan, premiered, it became really clear that this was created by a woman, who, to my surprise, is also Sharon Horgan.
I tried to enjoy the show, but I couldn’t. There’s just a lot of cringy moments, unfunny jokes, bad acting, and, most importantly, there’s just not much female nudity.
In episode 3, we do get a topless shot, but not from Sharon, but from a random woman in a sauna. But while it looks good, wait till I tell you how many men are naked in this scene.
There are like dozen of men shown totally naked with their dicks out. It is graphic and made for the female gaze, which isn’t wrong because there can be shows that target only women, but then why was it promoted as if men would be interested in it too?
And then there are these articles about it, calling it a funny, brilliant sex comedy, and then you see the ratings, and it becomes very clear how shit it is.
Seriously, why can’t HBO, which used to give us some brilliant shows, make a decent show these days that we can enjoy and remember? If they don’t fire these feminist showrunners, I don’t think HBO Max can ever be Peak again.
